What are some of the causes of cerebral palsy and can it be due to medical malpractice and part of a medical malpractice case?

There are a number of causes of cerebral palsy- and it can be caused by medical malpractice when a hospital or doctor chooses not to follow established patient safety rules.

Several signs and symptoms of fetal distress indicate a severe oxygen shortage, also called asphyxia.  Unfortunately, many residents, interns and medical students often rotate through obstetrics in D.C. hospitals.   They may not recognize the signs and syptoms of fetal distress, may not be willing to call in an experienced attending physician to manage the delivery, and may not know which actions to take to prevent serious harm to the mom and baby.  If the supply of oxygen to the baby's brain is reduced or stopped for a period of time, the baby can die or develop brain damage, sometimes called hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy.  This can lead to mental and physical disabilities., like cerebral palsy.

Other causes of cerebral palsy can include Rh incompatability, prematurity and infection. And all of these can be prevented with good medical care.

If you have a child with cerebral palsy in D.C. or Maryland, you need a thorough investigation and analysis by experienced medical malpractice attorneys.  We will review the records, analyze the medical treatment with outside expert physicians and help you determine whether your child's cerebral palsy, disabilities or delays are due medical malpractice.

Then we'll get to work to get your son or daughter the resources they need to live a full and healthy life despite their cerebral palsy or developmental delay, by holding the hospital accountable for the harm they caused.  And hopefully, making sure it doesn't happen to another baby.
