Just three months into the New Year GM has announced that it recalls approximately 4.8 million vehicles. The recall is issued to 490,000 trucks and 172,000 compact cars. On Friday March 28, 2014 GM had added about 971,000 compact cars to that list. The total number of cars and trucks that are being recalled is six times more than the total number of cars and trucks recalled in 2013. There have been about 12 deaths in the total number of 31 crashes due to the problems associated with the cars and trucks being recalled, although they did not start officially recalling the cars and trucks until February, having known about the problems since 2001.
The trucks that are being recalled by the company have loose fitting transmission coolers that have caused leaks which lead to fires. So far GM has been made of aware of three fires, but no injuries directly linked to the defect itself. Among the compact cars being recalled, the Chevy Cruze model with the 1.4 liter four cylinder engines, the right axle half shaft could potentially break, and cut power to the front wheels. They state that while the engine could still run along with the power steering and brakes, this is still a huge danger to drivers. According to GM, there have not been any crashes or injuries related to this defect, but is aware of a few episodes occurring.
