September has arrived, and so have the school bells. With back-to-school season in full swing, we see an increase in the number of pedestrians and drivers on our local roads. Not to mention, we start to see school buses again! So, here at Donahoe Kearney, we urge you to be mindful of the increase in traffic and school-aged children on our roads, and to be extra careful so as to avoid accidents. Follow these tips to avoid an auto accident in the DC Metropolitan area:
- Give pedestrians the right of way all the time – a lot of children walk to school, either with other children or a guardian. Make sure as the school year starts, you’re giving them the right of way.
- Obey school zone speed limits – the long summer gives us plenty of time to ignore these limits, but they are more likely to be in effect again as the school year begins. Slow down in a school zone.
- Watch our for school buses – you’ll see school buses on the roads again. Make sure to stop behind them when they stop, and be patient as children board and disembark.
- Add 20 minutes to your travel time – now that summer is over, parents are more likely driving their children to school, and traffic patterns will change in our area. Try to add 20 minutes to your travel time, so you’re less pressured to speed.
We hope these tips will allow for a safe back to school season.
Even with the best tips in the world, we all know that accidents are sometimes unavoidable.
