When looking for a workers' comp lawyer, make sure you are looking for someone who has experience in handling this type of cases.

Looking for a lawyer to make sure you can feed your family and get the medical treatment you need under the workers comp system?  Be careful, there are a lot of lawyers that advertise for all kinds of cases out there.  Here are a few basic questions to ask any lawyer before you decide:

How many workers compensation cases has the lawyer handled in the jurisdiction where you got hurt? That number should be in the hundreds. Lots of lawyers handle cases in Maryland but never come in to D.C. and vice versa, so be sure you get someone with the specific qualifications, resources and experience in the place you need it.

Has the lawyer written books, guides and other helpful information on topics you can use even if you don’t hire him?  Does the lawyer want clients who are educated about the system and the process because it will help their case in the long run? Does he explain it all in plain English, or does he hide behind a lot of legal mumbo jumbo?

If you were seriously injured, hiring the right lawyer is a big decision.  The lawyer you choose and what he does (or doesn’t do) can have far reaching effects on you and your family for years to come. Make sure you get someone you can trust. You want a law firm that you can have a real relationship with - not one that treats you like a number.
