Employers in the District of Columbia are required to carry workers' compensation insurance coverage for their employees.

In the District of Columbia, employers are required by law to carry workers' compensation insurance coverage for their employees. 

Workers' Compensation insurance protects an employer in the case that an employee becomes eligible to receive such benefits. Whether the employer is insurance privately or self insured, the employee must work at least 240 hours in a business quarter in order to be eligible for coverage.

When the employee is injured on the job in DC, he is eligible for full medical benefits. There are no limits, under the DC law regarding how much the medical expenses can be or for how long the medical care is needed. 

While the amount benefits paid under DC workers' compensation claims may vary from case to case, typical payments include:

  • Medical Costs
  • Disability pay
  • Rehabilitation expenses
  • Death benefits for survivors
